Curt Teich
This picture postcard from the "Animal Color Series from the San Diego Zoo" identifies the animal in this image section as a "Male Mandrill Baboon" from "West Equatorial Africa." Mandrills are related to baboons but not the same as baboons, and they live in a small area of central west Africa. This male, with characteristic facial coloring, is against the fence of its zoo enclosure. According to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources), in 2013 the mandrill is "vulnerable." The San Diego Zoo is in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. The Curt Teich number in the stampbox on the back of this picture postcard is 0DK-1343, decoded to the year 1960. The publisher's number in the upper left corner of the card is LM-17.
