Botanical Building and Gardens, Balboa Park, San Diego, California
This view of the Botanical Building mainly shows the gardens stretching south from the building, with just a glimpse of the lagoon (later Lily Pond) below the fountain. The Lily Pond and Botanical Building and conservatory were designed by the architectural firm of Bertram Goodhue (1881-1943), for the Panama-California Exposition of 1915. The Lily Pond was also known as the Lagoon, Laguna de las Flores, Laguna de Espejo, and Reflecting Pool. The roof of the Botanical Building is redwood lath, open to the weather, so the building is sometimes called the "Lath House." The exposition was held in San Diego's Balboa Park to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal.
