Formal Gardens, Balboa Park, San Diego, California
Opposite the formal gardens created for the Panama-California Exposition of 1915 is the Varied Industries Building, stretching all the way from the right in the middle to the distance toward the left. This largest of the exhibition halls, known as the Palace of Foods and Beverages during the California Pacific International Expositon of 1935, was also known as the Food and Beverages Building. It was also constructed for the 1915 Exposition, and in 1916 was known as the Varied Industries and Food Products Building, later the County Fair Building. After a bond issue in 1968 approved preserving the ornamentation and replacing the building, the Casa del Prado was dedicated on the same site in 1971. Across from it on the left is the Southern California Counties Building, from which the gardens stretched north for five acres. This building burned down in 1925.
