Tower of California Building from western entrance, Balboa Park
The California State Building on the California Quadrangle includes the Callifornia Tower and the California Building later known as the San Diego Museum of Man (glimpsed here at the vertical center on the far left). This view is from Cabrillo Bridge and shows the western entrance arch on El Prado at right, and in the middle, there is a side view of the facade on the north side of the California Quadrangle that served as the entrance to the San Diego Museum (of Art). The buildings were designed by Bertram Goodhue (1869-1924) for the Panama-California Exposition of 1915 held in San Diego's Balboa Park to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. The California Tower and Building were known as the Palace of Science during the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935. Also shown is a portion of the Administration Building (on the left on the viewer's side of the entrance). This was the first building constructed for the 1915 exposition.
