[Curt Teich and Company, Incorporated, Chicago, Illinois]
The House of Hospitality was originally constructed for the Panama-California Exposition of 1915-1916 as the Foreign Arts Building or Foreign Liberal Arts Building. It was designed by architect Carleton M. Winslow (1910-1946), then remodeled by Richard Requa for the California Pacific Exposition of 1935, when a second floor was added that is visible here. It was demolished and rebuilt in the same Spanish-Renaissance style in 1997, housing the Balboa Park Visitors Center, The El Prado restaurant, the Balboa Park Gift Shop, and the San Diego Police Department storefront. In the middle of the courtyard is the fountain around "La Tehuana" (Woman of Tehuantepec or Aztec woman), the statue by Donal Hord (1902-1966). The Teich number in the lower right white border is 5A-H1236, from which the date was derived.
