The Hotel Glenmore on Catalina Island, winter rates
1920s
Enter a free text date.
This picture postcard shows both the hotel's street front and an inset of Avalon Bay. The hotel's winter rates are quoted, $1 to $2.50 without bath, and $2.50 to $5 with bath (in room). At the time R. R. Johnston was the proprietor. The decade is determined by the fact that in the inset one can see the first "casino" (ballroom, not gambling) built between the mainland and Sugar Loaf Rock, in 1920. In 1929 the old casino was torn down and a new one built, with the demolition of Sugar Loaf Rock, seen in the inset on the far right. In 2014 the renovated hotel is still operating.
