A steamship ferry departs the Steamer Pier. Prominent on the right is the Peter Gano House, built in 1890, and on the other side of the Bay, defining its northwestern edge, is Sugarloaf Point, with Sugar Loaf Rock jutting out into the Pacific Ocean. Although no publisher is given, the number 89 appears in front of an explanatory paragraph on the back. This printed message gives an approximate distance of the island from the mainland, the height of the mountains (3,000 feet); the fact that Avalon was at that time the only settlement on the island; that there are few bays or coves one can sail into; and that "thousands of tourists and campers visit it."
