This hospital started construction in 1953 on Kearny Mesa and was dedicated in 1955. This was the first of several Sharp hospitals and other medical facilities in San Diego that evolved into the Sharp HealthCare system. A new Sharp Memorial Hospital was opened on this site in January 2009, the Stephen Birth HealthCare Center at Sharp Memorial Hospital. The original Sharp hospital was named for the principal donor Thomas E. Sharp's son, Lt. Donald Sharp, who died on an Army Air Force mission so that his comrades could escape to safety.
