Thackeray was a candidate for the city council seat for district 2 in San Diego in 1967, 2 years of college. She worked on the Goldwater for President campaign. She discusses her election campaign for the city council seat, saying that her total expenditure was $30,000, but she "should have had another $30,000." Women admitted later that they discriminated against her because of her gender. She was interviewed about women in politics and public life at her home in Ocean Beach, California. The interviewed was conducted by the "Oral History Research Department at California San Diego State University.
