The tape begins with the Shaw speaking about wanting to do oral history of people in Del Mar. This interview is part of a class project on women in politics. Shaw was born in a small town in Iowa. She had one sister; her mother had died when she was a baby; her father had remarried. Shaw's father was well read but had not attended college. Her husband was semiretired at the time of the interview; he had been in community organization and fundraising, which was her profession as well. She mentioned her two sons: Ted and Chris. She has a BA from University of California, Los Angeles, in political science. According to her obituary on the SFGate website (deceased March 29, 2012), she "was extremely active; she started on the school library in Del Mar, Served on the Del Mar Union School District School Board, led efforts to expand Torrey Pines State Preserve through the purchase of the extension, was a leader in the effort to preserve Crest Canyon, and oversaw the final efforts to complete the theater building for La Jolla Playhouse, on the campus of UC San Diego." She moved to San Francisco and continued her volunteer work and philanthropy.
