Interviewer: Simons, Kermit
Marshall served two terms from 1962-1970 on the Newport Beach, California City Council, then served as the first female mayor from 1968-70. Marshall was married and had just "celebrated my 50th birthday" at the time of this interview. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she attended UCLA, then moved to NYC and worked in market research. Her husband had a background in accounting, owned some orange groves, and was at the time engaged in industrial property management; they had been married 26 years and were known for their philanthropy. She had been on the City Planning Commission, as well as other civic volunteering, before her election to the City Council. She found her accounting experience helped in her political positions, along with her flexible time schedule. Mrs. Marshall died in 2011. This interview was conducted for the "Oral History Department" at California State University, San Diego.
