Interviewer: Bungay, J. Edward
The interview takes place at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Kellogg was born in Cleveland, Ohio, 82 years before the interview. His parents moved to Detroit, his father working for the Scripps-McCray League of newspapers, his mother the daughter of William Armitage Scripps who founded the Detroit News. They then moved to Kansas City, his father published the Kansas City News. After he was in a wagon accident in Kansas City, his parents sent him to California. From Altadena he journeyed to La Jolla. He tells of his life in La Jolla beginning in 1908 with his aunts, Miss Ellen Browning Scripps and Miss Virginia Scripps, and relates many family anecdotes. He also discusses in depth the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, which his father founded. Kellogg managed the club after his father's death and expanded it into a successful vacation destination. He married Alice Crowe of Long Beach, who also went to Stanford University. She was engaged in insurance during World War I, in which he served in a signal battalion in the United States Army member. His father went on to acquire the La Jolla Beach and Yacht Club, changing its name to the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. He took over his father's estate when his father became ill, resigning his position as a newspaper owner. He describes a grunion run in which people took them in buckets to the Club restaurant. (Kellogg has a speech ready and reads it.)
