A message on the back claims that the area is "Known as a gathering place for athletes and Muscle Men." In the photograph, several men and women perform on a long mat, the most prominent a threesome where one man is standing on another's shoulders and holding the hips of a woman posing in a swan dive. The original area was the Santa Monica Beach Playground, with people exercising there starting around 1932-1934. The platform shown here was erected later just south of the Santa Monica Pier. According to one source, Muscle Beach "closed" in the 1950s. The publisher's number P14455 is on the divided back.
