"Port Los Angeles" was a candidate for the Los Angeles port that did not win. The pier shown here was called "The Long Wharf" or "The Longest Wharf in the World" at Pacific Palisades, the latter word misspelled in the title. In the picture, a palm tree dominates an overlook with a driftwood fence. The view is north across Santa Monica canyon. In 1897, San Pedro Bay was selected by the Army Corps of Engineers under authority of the Unites States Congress. This wharf was closed to shipping in 1913 and was torn down by 1920. The publisher's number 4628 is on the divided back along with the phrase "Made in Germany."
