A contained lake or reservoir has a ramada at the end and is bordered by flowers and surrounded by trees. The Smiley family did extensive landscaping and created reservoirs for watering. A Los Angeles Herald article from 1892 claims that "Enormous reservoirs on the crest of the hill [of Smiley Heights], supplied from Bear valley, guarantee an exhaustless supply of water." The publisher's number H. 85 is on the divided back along with the phrase "Made in Germany."
