A walkway lies beside masses of flowers that border a lake or reservoir, with trees on the right. Smiley Heights was named after the Smiley family who landscaped this area of Redlands and built reservoirs to water it. A Los Angeles Herald article from 1892 claims that "Enormous reservoirs on the crest of the hill [of Smiley Heights], supplied from Bear valley, guarantee an exhaustless supply of water." The publisher's number 4188 is on the divided back along with the phrase "Made in Germany."
