Bakersfield Eating House, Bakersfield, California
Men congregate in front of a two-story building with stone steps leading up to the front porch. Tracks are in the foreground, trees in the middle ground. In 1878, Fred Harvey, in partnership with the head of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, began to open restaurants, then hotels as well as dining cars, along the railroad lines. At his death in 1901 there were 47 restaurants in 12 states. After a name change to the Harvey House Restaurant, this one was demolished in 1972 along with the original train station next to it. Fred Harvey is listed as publisher on the divided back.
