The bathhouse, known as Los Baños del Mar, opened in 1901 with a Moorish design and a bandshell on the second floor (the arch visible here in the center of the building). It included an "Amusement Hall," a laundry, and an observation deck. The Plaza dated from the 1890s, built by the City. The Pleasure Pier, of which the beach end is shown here on the left, was built to hold pipes from the sea to the bathhouse. The bathhouse burned in 1913, was rebuilt and then replaced by a swimming pool with the same name in 1938. The plaza was mostly demolished when Cabrillo Boulevard, which ended at the bathhouse, was continued through the hill behind it. Here a surrey waits on the beach for the owners, while three horses are tied up a railing on the right. The left panel on the back is reserved for a return address only, with the publisher's number 3177 along the dividing line.
