El Fureides, near Santa Barbara, California
El Fureidis, Santa Barbara, California
In another postcard this passage is called the "main axis of garden from casino." El Fureidis (mispelled here), eventually in Santa Barbara proper, was designed by Bertram Goodhue for James Waldron Gillespie. On the divided back, there is a promotional message: "The Santa Barbara country is a place of ideal climate and beautiful scenery. On slopes and terraces its artistic homes have a background of ever blooming flowers, of shrubs and trees such as grow best in a semi-tropic clime. One[sic] the road of a thousand wonders." The ending sentence is a railroad promotion. There is also a small notation in cursive using pencil: "The Gillespie Place in the Italian Gardens." The card was made in Germany, with the publisher's number 5279 on the divided back along with another number, 874, printed upside down in the stampbox.
