Plucking plumes at the Cawston Ostrich Farm, California
Although Cawston's Ostrich Farm raised birds to sell their feathers, they also had a tourist business partially promoted through streetcar lines that ran to the farm. Ostriches pulled carts and carriages, and there were tours, clothing, and souvenirs for sale, as well as admission paid to watch as ostriches had their feathers clipped off for processing and sale. The publisher's number on the divided back of this German-made card is 4265, and another number (64874) is upside down in the stampbox. Due to the divided back and publisher's close of business, the possible dates of production of this card are around 1907 to 1915.
