Mrs. McKinley, Cawston's Ostrich Farm, California
Although Cawston's Ostrich Farm raised birds to sell their feathers, they also had a tourist business partially promoted through streetcar lines that ran to the farm. This ostrich's name probably derives from the First Lady of the United States from 1897 until the assassination of her husband William McKinley in 1901. In the picture, an ostrich stands alone in front of shrubbery. Both Mr. and Mrs. McKinley are shown in an earlier photograph (1896-1900?) at the Denver Public Library. The publisher's number on the divided back of this German-made card is 4262. The dividing line and the site of manufacture date this card from about 1907 to around 1915.
