Southern Pacific mammoth wharf, Port Los Angeles, California

This 4,600-foot wharf a half mile north of Santa Monica Canyon entered into the Free Harbor Fight that led to the selection of the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro Bay in 1897. This pier was named Port Los Angeles, jutting into Santa Monica Bay from what became Pacific Palisades. Sources are inconsistent, but it appears that Southern Pacific bought the Los Angeles and Independence line that included this wharf, extended it, and began routing to pick up freight from ships docking here by the 1890s. The wharf was closed to shipping in 1913 and torn down by 1920. The publisher's number on the divided back of this German-made card is 4504.
