Salt Lake Railroad Bascule Bridge, Long Beach, California, largest of its kind in the world
This bridge, later replaced by the Gerald Desmond Bridge, joined Terminal Island to the mainland by rail. It displaced an earlier fixed bridge so that ships could pass through the channel, using a "bascule" design by Joseph Strauss based on medieval drawbridges. This early tinted postcard was made in Germany, as most postcards were before World War I. The word "Gerald" is pencilled into the message panel on the divided back. The publisher was in business from 1901-1915.
