Mud volcanoes near Salton Sea, Imperial Valley, California
Frasher, Burton Sr.
Photographic paper: Dops
Mud volcanoes are not igneous or true volcanoes but rather a geothermal phenomenon associated with faults or fissures. The ones in the Salton Sea area are near the town of Niland. This Real Photo Post Card was created by a process in which any photographer could take a "snapshot," deliver the negative to a photo developer and have it printed on a postcard backing. The Dops papers used for this photograph were issued from 1925-1942, according to the letters bordering the stampbox on the back. Burton Frasher, Sr., used this process through his career as a photographer and publisher, spanning years between 1920 and 1955.
