Mud volcanoes are not igneous or true volcanoes but rather a geothermal phenomenon associated with faults or fissures. The examples in the Salton Sea area are near the town of Niland. On the back of the card a short paragraph says they are located "at the southern end of the sea near Mullet Island." The number in the right bottom margin is 112861, which, according to the guide maintained by the Curt Teich Postcard Archives, refers to postcards made in 1926.
