Bridge over the Salton Sea built by the Southern Pacific Railroad, California to Arizona Route
circa 1910
Enter a free text date.
The Southern Pacific Railroad line had just been completed to Calexico in 1904 when the Colorado River flooded and broke through a new canal head works southwest of Yuma, Arizona. The flooding into the Salton Basin continued until 1907, when the break was sealed and the new bridge trestle shown here finished. The Imperial Valley rail connection of the Inter-California Railway Company was completed through Mexico in 1911, connecting to Southern Pacific's main line near Yuma. The publisher's number on the divided back is A R 28. The motto on the back, "On the line of S.P.R.R." may have been part of a promotional campaign.
