G. B. Warren, Esq.,
Chief Clerk, Palace Hotel,
San Francisco, Calif.,

My dear Mr Warren:-
I want to thank you for your favor of the 27th [unknown]. Wish you would see Mr Mergenthaler and sound him. I do not want to write him until I know about how he feels. Would like very much to get the kind of man he apparently is, though do not see my way clear to pay as much as $200. per month for our work. Would do so, however, provided I can get the proper kind of a man, if it became necessary.
I suppose at the time you wrote me you had not received my prior letter in which I asked if we could not make some arrangement for you to come down. I felt every time I visited the Palace that it was improving under Mr Livingstone's arrangement, but am sorry to hear reports that it is not holding up to the former standard, though this may arise partly from the changes and tearing down.
The clerk of the Baldwin, Mr [unknown], writes that he cannot consider a proposition at present.
