Six unidentified female cheerleaders pose with the Montezuma ("The Aztec") sculpture on the Main Quad.
The sculpture was created on a Depression-era WPA (Work Projects Administration) grant that took a year for sculptor Donal Hord (1902-1966) and his assistant Homer Dana (1900-1987) to carve out of black diorite, a very hard stone that blunts tools. The base, also from 1937, was contributed by the Class of 1937.
