This is Volume III, Number 4 of the White and Gold, dedicated to President Samuel T. Black (first president, served 1898-1910), of whom there is a portrait immediately following the table of contents. On page 9 is a drawing of San Diego Bay looking at Coronado from a northern high point near Harbor Drive showing the North and South "Islands" before the Spanish Bight was filled in and before fill from dredging was added to the northern part of Coronado or Harbor or Shelter "Islands." An editorial mentions under the heading of "San Diego Hopes" that landscaping of the campus is progressing, but that it is still a "bare, pebbly, dry-grassed campus, planted with trees too young, alas, to be of shelter to any but birds and jackrabbits."
