"Aztec" sculpture showing part of its base, on the Main Quad
Hord, Donal
Dana, Homer
This sculpture, labeled "Montezuma" on its plaque, was originally on the Main Quad.

San Diego artist Donal Hord (1902-1966) sculpted "Aztec" for San Diego State College. The statue of an Aztec warrior was cut from a single 2.5-ton block of black diorite. The Depression-era WPA (Work Projects Administration) provided funds for Hord's salary, but funding for tools and materials had to come from private sources. The San Diego Art Guild and several local campus student groups donated money. Hord and his assistant, Homer Dana (1900-1987), completed the statue in 1937. It was originally located on the Main Quad, and in 1984 moved to the south entrance. Due to trolley construction, it was relocated in Student Services West. The inscription on the base of the sculpture, "Base Presented by Class of 1937," can only partially be read here.
