Morro Rock, Morro Bay, California
Porter, Merle
The divided back has this description: "Morro (Sp., Headland) Rock is a 576 foot high pile of trachyte (volcanic rock) and is sometimes called 'Gibraltar of the Pacific.' Gaspar de Portola's expedition camped on Morro Creek on September 8, 1769 as he made his way north. This is a land of history. It was near here that Don Canet lived in great grandeur. It is said that long after he and his fine horse had died that on moonlight nights one can hear neighing and mad galloping of a horse down the sand-spit near the rock. Some say they have seen a misty form enter a phantom skiff and row towards the rock . . . M.P. [Merle Porter]" Numbers on the divided back include C-212 and 77246 in the same line as the "Photo-color by Merle Porter" attribution.
