Morro Bay--Morro Rock, California
Porter, Merle
A downtown street with shops on the right stretches from the foreground past a large rock to the Pacific Ocean on the left. Visible signs include those for liquor, auto parts, clothing, real estate, gasoline (Mobilgas with Mobil's red flying horse), and "Service Center News," with a sign on a parked truck for Lucky Lager beer. According to a description on the back, "Morro Bay is located behind the rock by the same name. Morro (Spanish for headland) Rock, sometimes called the 'Gibralter [sic] of the Pacific,' rises 576 feet above the shallow lagoon impounded by sand dunes. The town is a year-round resort with sports on the smooth waters of the bay. Sport fishing boats operate from the docks that line the short line of the bay. Digging clams is a sport in season, along the sandy beach. The downtown area is complete with stores, cafes, and motels. Thousands of people stop here over-night on their way to Hearst Castle (see other Royal Post Cards on the history of Castle) or on their trip to Carmel and Monterey by way of highway one. . . M.P" [Merle Porter]. Numbers on the back of the card are B-516 in the left lower corner and 523537 at the bottom of the dividing line with the publisher's name.
