This building, two stories with towers and an entrance with a round arch, was constructed in 1909 on the Abbot Kinney Pier. By 1910 it was The Marine Biological Station--Venice for the University of Southern California (USC), also known in 1916 as the Venice Aquarium and Biological Station. It was established as a station by Albert B. Ulrey, USC's first marine biologist. It not only provided research resources but offered summer courses for the University's students. It was destroyed when the Pier burned in December of 1920. On the divided back are the publisher's number 5313, the phrase "Made in Germany," and a penciled note in the message panel: "In here are Seals and all kinds of fish." Another number upside down in the stampbox is 70552.
