On the right a canal lets into the Venice lagoon. At that entrance is a long excursion boat in contrast to the rowboats and the one gondola in the foreground, a large one with many passengers. In the message panel on the divided back is a note handwritten in cursive using pencil, "Near Santa Monica." Venice was carved out of the Ocean Park area of Santa Monica by entrepreneur Abbot Kinney, who built the canals and lagoon and named the place, now a neighborhood of Los Angeles. The publisher's number on the back is obscured by a rubber stamp but may be F 22. Also on the back is the phrase "Made in Germany."
