Santa Fe Ice Plant, Needles, California
The Albertype Company, Brooklyn, New York
This black-and-white card shows a trainyard ice plant behind tracks that go over a bridge. Before refrigerated train cars, ice was manufactured at or near trainyards for shipments of perishable foods. According to an account by D. K. Spencer, who worked there in 1943, the plant was about three miles south of town, was around 500 feet long and 300 feet wide, with facilities for making ice all year long and storing ice during the winter for summer use. Although the ice plant and dock were removed, Ice Plant Road remains in Needles.
