The beach, Hope Ranch, Santa Barbara, California
The beach, Hope Ranch, Santa Barbara County, California
Sea cliffs rise steeply from a deserted beach along the Pacific Ocean. The description from the back of the card is: "The Hope Ranch extends for two miles along the ocean. Entrance to the beach is gained through a canyon down which the roadway winds. The islands of the Santa Barbara Channel twenty-five miles away can be distinctly seen [to the south; this card shows the view along the beach to the west]." This is a private beach only accessible from More Mesa, part of the Hope Ranch unincorporated area just west of Santa Barbara. The publisher's number on the divided back is 5284, with the message "Made in Germany." Another number is upside down in the stampbox, 884. The card must date from between 1907 (when divided backs were first allowed) to 1915, when the publisher ceased operations.
