A paragraph on the back explains that "This Altar is a Chinese family ancestral shrine. It was hand-carved and gilded with gold leaf in Canton about 200 years ago. The altar, brought to Santa Barbara in the 1880's by the Chinese free masons, was housed in the Chinese headquarters building on Cannon[sic] Perdido Street." A corrected note online gives 1898 as the year the museum piece arrived. The number 615779 is at the bottom of the stampbox on the divided back.
