The Club House, Santa Barbara, California
Santa Barbara Club, Santa Barbara, California
The Santa Barbara Club, pictured here in its 1904 building on Chapala Street, was founded in 1892 as a men's club. This two-story clubhouse with a Grecian style portal and arched upstairs windows was the site of the origin of the Union Oil Company (a group of small, private oilfield owners). It was designed by Francis Wilson and is flanked by a garden. The publisher's number 4500 is on the back, along with a "Made in Germany" notice. Another number in the back lower right corner is in parentheses, 52790. The divided back indicates that the card was produced in or after 1907.
