Oil rigs both on and just offshore are next to railroad tracks that can be seen on the left. These were the first offshore wells in the United States and were drilled from piers beginning in 1896. One pier goes further out on the Pacific Ocean than the reach of the image. Summerland is the next community east of Santa Barbara along Highway 101, since from here west to Cojo Bay, the California coast is actually east to west, with the ocean on the south.
