The Samarkand, Santa Barbara's Persian Hotel

This Real Photo Post Card shows the courtyard of the hotel, which operated from 1920 to 1940. According to a promotional sheet from the hotel, the name means "heart's desire." It had been Prynce Hopkins's "Boyland II," a private boys' school, starting in 1915. After he moved to Europe in 1918, his mother Mary Hopkins turned the property into a hotel, then sold it by 1937 to Alma Spreckles, after which it changed hands frequently, pausing only to be occupied by the Marines during World War II. The site was partially turned into a housing development, but 16 acres became a 21st-century retirement community with the same name. The photographic paper used to develop this card was manufactured from 1917 to 1930.
