Carl Laemmle bought several properties in the Los Angeles area for his Universal Pictures starting in 1912 after leaving New York City. One was in Hollywood and another in San Fernando Valley. The only one called "Universal City" was a second San Fernando ranch of 230 acres where the gates were opened to tourists in 1915 after filming had begun there in 1914. If the water shown here is the Los Angeles River, this suggests that the original Universal City was in what later became Studio City.
