This view of the Hotel Virginia shows the sign on the pergola at the north side of the building at the corner of Ocean and Chestnut. For contrast, a man standing in the sunken gardens below the building is only about twice as high as the letters. Designed by architects John C. Austin and Frederick C. Brown, the Virginia Hotel was originally the Bixby Hotel but was renamed in 1906 and opened in 1908. It was closed in 1932 after the stock-market crash, and demolished after the 1933 Long Beach earthquake.
