My dear General:-
I am obliged to leave on the morning train, to meet my wife, who is enroute, else I should have kept the engagement Mr. Robinson made with you for me this morning at ten o'clock. I send this letter to explain.

Mr. Robinson has told me of the interview with you. While nothing would please me better than to have the banquet here, I cannot see my way clear to stand the necessary loss which would be incurred by the terms proposed. You gentlemen do not seem to understand or realize the cost to us of serving extra meals at extra hours, in this community. It is not as though we were where servants could be obtained. Another element which you have not taken into consideration is, the amount of breakage from new and careless waiters, some of them being partly under the influence of liquor.

As you know, I am anxious to make the celebration a success in every way, and have shown my good-will by agreeing to pay $1.00 for every $9.00 subscribed by all other parties of the community up to $2,000.00; that is, our proportion not to exceed $200.00; and I stand ready to make good this offer. But reflection over night and discussion with my employees here, has forced me to conclude that we cannot stand any further expense.
