C. W. McIntire, Esq.,
Ass't Manager,

Dear Sir:-
Referring to our several conversations, in which you have expressed a desire to put more expense on the table, and otherwise improve the service of the hotel, would say that, I have given the matter considerable though, and have concluded to follow your advice, and to allow your views to govern in the matter.
I must first call your attention to the fact that our fuel expense, owing to the late rise in coal, will be for the next six months probably $60.00 per day above what it has been. Would also call your attention to the fact that all the waiters are promised a 20% advance from the first of January, and to the further fact that eggs, butter, and nearly everything else which enters into the expense have largely increased in cost.
Under the above circumstances, we must advance our minimum rates of board. We cannot possibly board people at as low a charge as $15.00 per week; and you will, at such times and in such a way as your judgment dictates, advise all of the guests who are receiving such rates, that, from the first of January we will be forced to advance the charges.
It is a plain business proposition, and I hope the move will be received in that light, and that our guests will not feel we are taking any arbitrary action in the premises. Our rates are now lower than those of any other similar hotel in the world of which I have knowledge.
Rates to permanent boarders, where rooms are occupied singly, must not be lower than $17.50 per week, after January 1st.
I am afraid that this action will cause us to lose some of our oldest and socially most desirable guests; but the position must be recognized, and the rule outlined herein must be put in effect.

Yours truly,
E. S. Babcock
