Pea Soup Andersen's Restaurant, Buellton, California
Neil, Milt
This restaurant was founded in 1924 and became "Pea Soup Andersen's" after Robert Anderson returned to the family business, officially in 1947. Anderson picked up the original idea for advertising based on splitting peas one by one from a cartoon by Charles Forbell (whose name is at the bottom of the cartoon here) in Judge Magazine and obtained permission to use it. Artist Milt Neil redrew the cartoon, adding a smaller chef. The two splitting chefs, named in a contest, are shown here as Hap-Pea and Pea Wee, "splitting peas for Split Pea Soup." On the back, the advertising claims: "Carefully selected peas for Andersen's famed Pea Soup are split personally by chefs 'Hap-Pea' and 'Pea-Wee'. The delicious soup in a specialty of Pea Soup Andersen's Restaurant, Buellton, California, 43 miles north of Santa Barbara on U. S. Highway 101. P.S. Andersen Soups are now available in cans . . . Ask your grocer."
