This is part of the 33-acre Joseph W. Gillespie residence in the Montecito neighborhood, translated as "pleasure gardens" from the Spanish. The correct spelling is "El Fureidis." Shown here is the view from a terrace with three cement benches and two twisted pillars with ornate capitals, as well as one of the palm trees of the 125 varieties said to be collected by the owners. "The Gillespie place," designed by Bertram Goodhue and finished by 1910, allowed tourists to visit. The publisher was in business until 1936, and cards with white borders were in use from about 1915 to the 1930s. The publisher's number 13183 precedes the title in the bottom left border, from which the date was derived.
