Hotel Potter, Santa Barbara, California
Van Ornum Colorprint Company, Los Angeles, California
The back of this card announces that "The Potter has accommodations for a thousand guests." Here we see a vast lawn punctuated by flower beds, a palm tree, and a row of flowering shrubs in the foreground. In the distance the hotel utilizes the lazy-W design with an entry jutting out from five stories of rooms in the middle and two side wings. Two towers frame the entrance. The Potter, as it was known, opened in 1903 as a year-round hotel, rather than seasonal. It was sold in 1919, becoming the Belvedere, then sold once again to become the Ambassador. In 1921 the hotel burned to the ground and was not rebuilt. The Ambassador Park on West Cabrillo Boulevard is the site of the former entrance. Given the divided back (1907), this card would have been produced between 1907 and 1921.
