The name of the "Monty" awards originates with the "Montezuma" or "The Aztec" sculpture created for San Diego State University by artist Donal Hord, shown at the beginning of this video. The awards are given to those who have made significant contributions to the University, the San Diego community or California, nationally or internationally. They are symbols of achievement and success presented to distinguished alumni from each of the university's seven academic colleges, Imperial Valley Campus and Library and Information Access. Tenney, an author and founder of Care Packages from Home supporting American troops fighting abroad, received his Master's in Business Administration from San Diego State in 1967, going on to get his PhD from the University of Southern California, and teach finance at Arizona State University. Tenney is also an international advocate for survivors of the Bataan Death March, which he himself survived, and was final commander of American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor. He received his Monty Award on April 26, 2014.
