This excerpt is part of a sermon delivered by Jim Jones to his congregation in San Francisco in late 1974. Jones declares a passionate commitment to socialism, no matter what the costs. Don't worry about dying, he tells the congregation, adding that he has no intention of dying. "Everything we do will be radical," he says. The commitment of the people needs to be complete, and he warns his followers not to let their intellectualism--which he calls "the greatest defeating force"--or even their "mind of self-preservation" get in their way. "Put your blinders on and go forward," he says. There is prolonged clapping and shouting from the audience in several places, and the excerpt ends with a song accompanied by an organ. The selection presented here is the first 5:55 minutes of the tape, number Q1053-1 recovered by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation from Jonestown, Guyana. It was reviewed as part of the investigation into the murder of United States Congressman Leo J. Ryan. The audio file, transcript and summary excerpted here were provided by the Jonestown Institute, with the title here provided by Fielding M. McGehee III. The complete audio file, transcript, and summary are available on the Jonestown Institute's Web site.
