The audio portion presented here is approximately 8 minutes of what the Jonestown Institute calls Segment 5 of tape Q665. In it, Gelb reads to Prokes an article "Temple Trouble" that appeared in Newsweek Magazine, dated August 15, 1977, saying that he had tried to reach Jim Jones for comment on it. He discusses the story, by Kenneth L. Woodward with Mark Whitaker and Stephen Gayle (uncredited on the tape), and defends it, pointing out that the magazine is reporting what those outside the Peoples Temple say, whereas Temple supporters have been told not to talk. Prokes, a spokesperson for the Temple, says he doesn't think what people said was true, and that the Temple's attorneys have advised against allowing followers to be interviewed. At the end he thanks Gelb for reading him the article. Gelb had been a New York Times correspondent but at this time was the United States Assistant Secretary of State for Politico-Military Affairs. The original tape of this conversation was retrieved from Guyana by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation as part of their inquiry into the assassination of Congressman Leo J. Ryan on November 18, 1978, and originally reviewed by them in 1979 as "One Tracs 60/'10/16/77 Steve Katsaris.'" The full sound file is available on the Jonestown Institute Web site. The title here was provided by Fielding M. McGehee III.
